So I surrender, pursue a woman relentlessly and find myself falling until I realize she’s not who she says she is. It was the only way my parents could protect me. So when I end up in Emerson Falls, Oregon, the last thing I expected was to meet a man that is just as infuriating as he is captivating. I want to punch him in the junk as much as I want to climb him like a tree. And then I start to fall for him, but he can’t know why I’m really here. No one can. My life is threatened and complications arise, everything in shambles as I struggle to process it all, but the biggest question is, will Cash ever be able to accept all of the consequences of my circumstances and love me when he finds out the truth? I was kindly sent a copy of this book for review from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. A secret past, heartache and an emotional rollercoaster, with a good dash of steaminess, make for a must-read romance...
Cash Williams has zero plans of settling down. After seeing his parents’ marriage and the destruction it caused, he vowed he’d never let a woman into his heart. Instead, he’s only after one night, and the reputation he’s garnered means the ladies usually come to him. That’s until he pulls over someone driving the wrong way down a one-way street. Enter Piper Davis, a new arrival in Emerson Falls who lands a job as a nurse at the hospital. Cash can’t help but be captivated by this woman, even after she calls him out on his shit. Starting a whole new life in Emerson Falls, Piper doesn’t want to get her heartbroken, and that’s exactly what guys like Cash are capable of. Not only that, but there are aspects of her life and past that she can’t share with anyone. But there’s an undeniable spark between them that can’t be ignored, no matter how much both are scared to take that dive. I’ll admit, when I started this book, I wasn’t really vibing with it. I can’t really explain why, but I felt like it was missing something, even though I don’t know what that something was. But all of a sudden, at some point during the first third of the book, I was so invested in these characters and their story. Harlow’s writing reeled me in and I didn’t even know it! In saying that, the prologue had me intrigued – it played on the back of my mind as I read my way through the story, wondering when it would come into effect and how it would impact these characters. And even though I knew it would reappear down the track, I still wasn’t ready for the emotional rollercoaster that ensued. And what an emotional ride the final like 100 pages were! Obviously no spoilers, but it certainly tugged at the heartstrings and really affirmed my love for this book and these characters. Despite my whole ‘you really should read companion novel series in order, even though you don’t necessarily have to’, I have not actually read the two previous books in this series. However, like nearly all companion novel series, you really don’t need to worry about not having read the previous instalments – as much as I would have liked to have experienced Kane/Chloe and Cooper/Carla’s stories first, I’m now even more excited to go back and see how they got to where they were in this book. And after the epilogue, I’m SO excited for the next book in the series and to explore Kyle’s story more! Having not read anything by Harlow before, I didn’t know what to expect going into this book, even though the synopsis sounded right up my alley. However, I thoroughly enjoyed Cash and Piper’s story and the world of Emerson Falls, and already have the rest of the series slotted into my TBR for down the track. Definitely a book all romance fans need to be adding to their TBRs! |
